A Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a highly trained healthcare professional with an advanced education, years of clinical experience and hands-on patient care. Becoming an NP takes at least nine years of training, including a master’s degree and advanced clinical practice. NPs can do many of the same things as a GP: they can diagnose conditions, order and interpret tests, prescribe medications, and create treatment plans. They provide independent, high-quality, patient-centred care, especially for long-term health conditions, minor illnesses, and preventative care. NPs are often available at short notice, and if needed, they will discuss your care with another doctor to ensure a coordinated approach.
