Reproductive and sexual health looks different for everyone, and the reasons people come to us are just as varied. Some people want to sort out their contraception. Others need a sexual health check, want to talk through menopause, or are looking for gender-affirming care. Some aren't quite sure what they need yet.
Whatever's brought you here, our reproductive health services cover the full range of sexual and reproductive health care, all in a confidential, non-judgemental space.
What Reproductive and Sexual Health Care Covers at GP and Me
Our reproductive and sexual health services cover a wide range of care across different stages of life, including:
- Testing and screening: Sexual health checks, STI testing and treatment, and cervical screening
- Contraception and family planning: The pill, IUDs, Jadelle and emergency contraception
- Vaccination and prevention: HPV and Mpox vaccination, along with PrEP for HIV prevention
- Ongoing reproductive care: Menopause support and gender-affirming healthcare
Sexual Health and STI Testing
Sexual health appointments are for anyone who has concerns, not just people with symptoms. If you've had unprotected sex, a new partner, or a possible STI exposure, an appointment can help you work out whether testing or other care is appropriate.
Depending on your circumstances, your GP or Nurse Practitioner will ask about your symptoms, sexual history and the type of contact you've had. This helps determine which tests are right for you. Testing can involve urine, swabs or blood tests depending on the situation, and treatment can be arranged if needed.
Contraception
We offer a full range of contraception options, from the pill to long-acting methods like IUDs and Jadelle. If you're considering an IUD or Jadelle, we provide insertion, removal and follow-up care, all in a calm, supportive environment. Both procedures are partially funded, making them a lower-cost option for many patients. We also offer a local anaesthetic cervical block to help make IUD insertion more comfortable.
Emergency contraception is also available if you need it.
If you'd like to discuss contraception as part of a broader reproductive health appointment, let us know when booking so we can allow enough time.
Cervical Screening
Cervical screening is one of the most effective ways to detect early changes that could develop into cervical cancer, and we make it as straightforward and comfortable as possible.
We usually start with an HPV self-test swab, which you can do yourself privately. If HPV is detected, or your circumstances mean further assessment is needed, your GP or Nurse Practitioner will explain the next steps, which may include a clinician-taken sample or a referral for colposcopy.
If you're unsure whether you're due for screening or which type of test is right for you, just get in touch and we can help.
Menopause
Menopause feels different for everyone. Some people don’t notice it; others find the physical and emotional changes harder to manage. Either way, you don't have to navigate it on your own.
We can help you make sense of what's happening, discuss your symptoms and work out a management plan that suits you. Ongoing support is available as your needs change over time.
Gender-Affirming Care
For people exploring or undergoing gender affirmation, we provide respectful, individualised care in a safe and non-judgemental space. This includes discussions about your goals, wellbeing and treatment options, gender-affirming hormone therapy where appropriate, ongoing monitoring and referrals to specialist services when needed.
Vaccines and HIV Prevention
Some vaccinations and preventive treatments form an important part of reproductive and sexual health care, and we provide these alongside our other services.
The HPV vaccine, Gardasil 9, protects against HPV infections that can cause genital warts and cancer of the cervix, penis, and throat. It's free for eligible people aged 9 to 26 in New Zealand, and we provide both scheduled vaccinations and free catch-up doses for eligible patients. If you're unsure whether you or your child has been vaccinated, our nursing team can help you check.
We also provide Mpox vaccination for eligible patients. Eligibility depends on your individual circumstances, and a fee applies as the vaccine isn't funded in general practice.
For HIV prevention, we provide PrEP, including assessment, prescribing and ongoing monitoring. Your GP or Nurse Practitioner can discuss your circumstances and help work out whether PrEP is right for you.
What to Expect When You Book
The appointment you have will depend on what you need. Some visits are mainly a conversation, and others may involve an examination. Either way, your GP or Nurse Practitioner will explain what's happening and why before anything takes place.
If you need to discuss more than one concern, mention it when booking so we can allow enough time. Multiple concerns usually require double consultations. You don't need to know exactly which service you need before you get in touch. We can help you work out the most appropriate next step based on what you're experiencing.
Reproductive and sexual health appointments are handled with complete confidentiality, in line with the Privacy Act 2020 and Health Information Privacy Code 2020.
